Phew. Finally getting to blogging about some of the anime for the winter season. “Tower of Druaga – the Sword of Uruk” is the 2nd season in the Druaga series, the first being “the Aegis of Uruk”. I really liked Aegis of Uruk although the 1st episode threw me off a little. I was very skeptical of the first season, although I understood that they (Gonzo) wanted to parody everything in fantasy rpgs/animes, but I toughed it out and man was I glad I did. It has been a long time since I’ve watched a good fantasy anime with Dragons, swords, magic, and cat ears….errrr what? Aegis of Uruk stuck true to the formula of fantasy animes (my favorite being Record of Lodoss War) with a bit of parody and silliness here and there. I loved the OP, it was cheery and uplifting while tricking you into thinking it was gonna be like a .Hack type of “oh we’re playing the game in IRL”. The ending of the first season left me wanting more and I just couldn’t wait for Sword of Uruk.
Here’s what happened in season 1:
Before reading on if you haven’t finished the first season stop and go watch it or if you haven’t caught up to episode 3 in Sword of Uruk go finish that. Now onto the main topic:
Sword of Uruk picks up half a year after the events of the first season. The common folk are told that Druaga is defeated, the tower is monster free and all is well. A new captial city is constructed inside the tower under orders by King Gilgamesh. Our heroes have each gone their separate ways but will soon be united again.
Episode 1 was a good start. Like I said earlier Sword of Uruk takes place 6 months after the events in Aegis of Uruk. Fatina works as a tourguide, Jil is moping around, Kelb runs a fine ass restaurant, we see a new characters, faces of an old one (Utu if you can’t guess from above), and run into the catalyst for this adventure Kai…or Ki. I’m gonna go with Ki for the duration of the series. Horie Yui + Fatina+ tour guide uniform = awesome. Aside from introducing the characters and setting we see a little bit of relationship development with Jil and Fatina and I’m rooting for it. I was for Kaaya and Jil but well you know how that turned out. Again I said we meet the catalyst of the adventure Ki who upon meeting Jil is being chased by the Golden Knights, a power abusive group under King Gilgamesh. Ki presents Jil with a foreboding vision of what is to happen to Kaaya and Neeba and only he can prevent it. She also presents herself as none other than: Ki, first priestess of Ishtar and wife of Gilgamesh. What a twist.
I want to find out why Kaaya and Ki look so much alike.
In episode 2 our crew which consists of Fatina, Jil, Utu, and Ki are on the run from the Golden Knights and Uragon. They take refuge in Kelbs restaurant where they argue (well just Fatina and Jil) about the matter at hand, how they should just forget about the tower and continue on with a new life. Fatina doesn’t want anything to do with this so she storms off to her room. Things are cut short when the GK (Aberv. Golden Knights) bust down a heft security door to the restaurant and give more chase. Here we meet the newest member to the crew Henaro, a gluttonous female Druid, and no sooner does she meet the crew that she gets involved and eventually whisked to the tower. In order to reach the tower though they have to reach it using the new elevator contraption that’s being built where once again the GK come to meet them. They’re almost like Team Rocket, sheesh. Jil and co. fight off an entire squad of GKs, archers, and a ballista (I call haxs). Fatina comes in to join the fight, they ride the elevator, and cue next ep. Things are getting pretty good with a good amount of humor, such as the “I don’t notice you Utu without your helmet”. Oh and Ki is dangerous with a spoon, watchout.
Our crew climbs the tower and reach the Shrine of Emery where if you remembered from season 1 the gang almost got a Game Over. But things have changed and the once dangerous Shrine of Emery has been turned into a winter resort made by yours truly: Melt and Coopa. Melt is a multimillionaire who has let his money go to his head and has become pretty pompous. I don’t care how pompous you are, wearing a kilt in winter is crazy. Anyways, Melt being the idiot that he is turns down the offer to rejoin the crew and even betrays them to the GKs. RAGE. The GKs capture Ki but only temporary as Uragon steps on the baby Roper sending all the other ones into a rage and wrecking the entire resort area. Melt is billions of dollars down, gets pissed, attacks the crew, gets beat up by Ropers, and forced to help the GKs. Karma is a bitch.
Another good episode and in episode 4 we get to watch the newly formed crew beat up Druaga again.
Definitely looking forward to more Druaga as there can never be enough Roper craziness. I’m hoping to see more development between Jil and Fatina whilst waiting for a damn good excuse and “I’m sorry” from Kaaya.
