Megacon came and went, and now it’s time for a post. I haven’t posted in a long while, so I’ll make this a big ‘un. Curryninja’s post on Megacon made me decide I should make one, too.
Megacon, the pinnacle of anime related events for me during the year. It was good this year, but not the best it could’ve been. I’ve noticed a disturbing trend which has been causing this decay; the lack of diversification.
In years past at Megacon, I could find semi-obscure things here and there thoughout the convention. Items from Mushishi, Kino no Tabi, and other series when they were still just being released in Japan. This year I did find some Spice and Wolf and Aria items, but nothing past that. It seems that slowly but surely, all other anime that isn’t Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, FMA, One Piece, or (now) Soul Eater is being phased out. This really has been putting a damper on it all for me. I mean, I still do find lesser known things, just not in the quantity I once did.
This has also been accompanied with a more annoying fanbase every year. Before, the Naruto and FFVII cosplayers were expected in great number. But they weren’t super annoying, just everywhere. Now, the new thing is “free hugs,” “you lost the game,” and dressing up like a retard. It’s a very rage inducing thing to behold, and I don’t see it getting any better anytime soon. It’s hard to say how annoying they are, you have to experience it.
But, despite these bitchings, I had a lot of fun. Sunday I was a bit hung-over, but enjoyed it nonetheless. It was good to go with some friends and an almost-but-not-really-but-I’m-trying-girlfriend. A speeding ticket nailed my money supply for buying loot. But I still made out with some good booty. And here it be:
This Horo Calendar is pretty sweet. I was informed that they only had two. So I got one of only two at the entire show. Pretty nifty I think.
This Aria artbook is really nice. There were only two of these as well. As seen in Curryninja’s post, he got the other one. We ninja’d them all.
I like the two figures. And I got them for really cheap. Together they were only $9. Not bad for what they are. The VF-1S is pretty sweet. I went on Sunday and got a deal on it. I was really happy to get that.
And of course, Bulbasaur watches over me.
This sweet Female Draenei figure was there as well. I bought it for the girl I went with. She liked it alot. You couldn’t beat the deal on it, though. $10! The price was raised shortly after that, but we got it for cheap. That was the prize of bargain hunting at this con.
It’s been a while since I’ve posted for many reasons. The main one has been school. It’s really tough, but I’m getting through it. But I’ll try to get back in the groove (though I doubt I will). To pass the time I have been reading… a lot.
The series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin has been fantastic. It is one of the best fantasy series I have read in a long time. I would try to describe it, but I would not do it justice. It’s story and characters are engaging (to say the least), and it has hooked me like few books do.
The reason it hooked me I think, is that unlike things like Harry Potter and The Chronicle of Narnia, this book feels real. These people feel like they could have been people from history books. These events all feel like they have weight, and the world is constructed so well. This stems most likely from the lack of over-the-top magic and creatures. Sure there are magic and strange creatures, but they don’t permeate everything, and make it all corny. It’s very down to earth and gritty. It’s rather hard to describe, so I would say right now you need to go out and buy the first book A Game of Thrones and read it. Then you’ll understand what I mean.
I’m on the third book in the series as of now. And I can’t put it down. I’m really trying to read through it slowly, so that I can finish the fourth book as the fifth comes out. But, it doesn’t look like that will happen. I read the second book far too fast for that too happen. I really recommend this series to anyone out there, whether you like fantasy or not.
And for those of you who haven’t seen it, check out The Green Demon challenge. It’s fantastic!
